Michael Tobin has worked for the Wisconsin State Public Defender (SPD) since 1979, except for two years off in the mid-eighties for good behavior. He started as a staff attorney in 1979, left the agency in 1984 to teach at the University of Puget Sound Law School, and returned to the SPD in 1986 as a regional supervisor.
Mr. Tobin has served as the Director of the SPD Trial Division since 1994. He has spoken at numerous SPD training programs, co-authored a treatise on Wisconsin Criminal Procedure, and authored 5 supplements to the State Bar's Wisconsin Criminal Defense Manual. He has served on many statewide justice committees, including the Wisconsin Sentencing Commission, the State Courts' Policy and Planning Advisory Committee, and the state's Reentry Commission.
